A referral from a doctor is not always required to start voice therapy. While some insurance plans may mandate a referral, in many cases, you can directly schedule an appointment with a voice therapist without a referral.
However, to begin voice therapy services, you will need laryngeal endoscopy- an exam of the vocal folds.
A laryngeal exam before starting voice therapy provides crucial diagnostic information, helps in tailoring treatment plans, enables monitoring of progress, and allows for collaboration among professionals. It ensures that the voice therapy approach is appropriate and effective for the individual's specific voice-related concerns.

Most clients who are seeking voice therapy have seen a physician and have been recommended to see a specialized speech-language pathologist for their symptoms and complaints. Therapy is typically working on regaining skills or abilities that have been lost due to injury or illness. Training does not need a diagnosis or referral from a physician and typically focuses on building skills and maximizing function for an individual to meet their goals. Training sessions are not eligible for submission to insurance reimbursement.
